Tips for Shopping on a Budget

These shopping tips are helpful when planning your next shopping trip.

Make a grocery list before you head to the store.

Grab a pen and paper to make your list, but first, ask yourself these questions:

  • What leftovers do I already have? Can I use them?
  • Do I already have produce that needs to be cooked or frozen?
  • What meals do I want to make this week?

Use the Rouses sale paper to help guide your list.

Get creative in the kitchen.

Here are some ways to get creative in the kitchen to minimize waste.

  • Take a bag of spinach that looks wilted and cook the spinach in a skillet to sauté with olive oil.
  • Add cooked vegetables to an omelet.
  • Peel and freeze over ripe bananas to use for banana bread or smoothies.

Stretch portions by using whole grain pantry staples like beans, lentils, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice.

Don’t skip the frozen aisle and the canned aisle.

Often people forget that there are so many nutritious options in the canned and frozen aisle, especially when it comes to getting fruit and vegetable options.

For frozen vegetables, look for your favorite options that are available year round in most cases.  Opt for items that are not seasoned or sauced, and add your own seasonings to reduce the sodium content.  Use frozen fruits for smoothies and oatmeal toppings.

In the canned aisle, look for canned items with no added salt, and don’t forget about canned beans for a nice plant-based protein option.  Additionally, canned fruit in 100% fruit juice makes it easy to prepare for busy families.
