Summer Spritzes

Every spritz starts with the same simple 3-2-1 formula: 3 ounces of Prosecco, 2 ounces of a flavorful liqueur or aperitif, and 1 ounce of unflavored sparkling water or club soda. Then, depending on the spritz, you can add a fresh garnish or herb, like mint in a Hugo Spritz or a lemon twist in a Disaronno Spritz.

Aperol Spritz is the original, bitter orange, Prosecco, soda water, invented back in 1919 and still the first thing most people picture. There’s also a dirty version trending right now: the standard Aperol Spritz with a splash of olive brine added, the same move that makes a martini “dirty.” We also have the new Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve bottles.

Campari Spritz swaps in Campari instead of Aperol for extra bitterness. This one’s really for people who already love Aperol and want more punch. Campari is a deep, bright red. (Negronis get their red color from Campari).

Sarti (full name Sarti Rosa) Spritz is the pink one, Sicilian blood orange, mango, and passion fruit, tropical and fruit-forward with none of Aperol’s bitterness. A nice entry point if you’ve always liked the idea of a spritz more than the taste of Aperol itself.

Hugo Spritz is pale green, softer and more muted. It trades the bitter orange for elderflower liqueur (like St-Germain or St. Elder Natural Elderflower), paler, floral, a little gentler on the palate, floral sweetness instead of bitterness, the opposite of what Aperol brings to the table. A few months ago, nobody had heard of it. Now it’s everywhere.

Limoncello Spritz is apparently Sabrina Carpenter’s favorite summertime sip. Limoncello flavor is showing up everywhere right now, and Celsius even released a limited-edition energy drink flavor modeled after it. If you want to try a non-alcoholic Limoncello Spritz, Pallini Limonzero is a good place to start.

Disaronno Spritz, also called an Amaretto Spritz, is almond-flavored, though technically Disaronno is made from apricot kernel oil rather than actual almonds. It is made with Disaronno, Prosecco, lemon juice, and a splash of soda.
