Pigs in A Blanket

Star Spangled Blankets

“Everything” bagel seasoning adds great flavor but can be quite salty. For a lower-sodium option, swap it out with sesame seeds. Brush with unsalted butter for a richer flavor or a beaten egg for a golden shine; both help the seasoning stick

Ingredients

For the Pigs in a Blanket

1 (8-ounce) tube crescent rolls

1 (12-ounce) package cocktail wieners or cocktail sausages, patted very dry (this helps the dough stick and prevents sogginess)

2-3 ounces cheddar or American cheese, cut into thin strips (optional)

Unsalted butter, melted, or 1 egg, beaten, for brushing

Everything bagel seasoning, to taste

Ketchup and mustard, for serving

Honey mustard, for serving (see below, or use your favorite jarred version)

For the Hot Honey Mustard (optional)

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

2 tablespoons hot honey

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Unroll the crescent dough on a floured surface and separate into triangles. Slice each triangle lengthwise into 3 narrow strips (you should have 24 total).

Place one mini wiener or sausage and, if using, a small strip of cheese on the wide end of each dough strip, and roll up. Arrange seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet, about 1 inch apart.

Before baking, brush with melted butter or beaten egg for color and shine, and sprinkle with everything seasoning or sesame seeds. Place sheet in preheated oven and bake for 13 to 16 minutes, or until golden brown.

Meanwhile, if making the honey mustard, stir together the Dijon, mayonnaise and hot honey in a small bowl, and set aside for serving.

Serve pigs in a blanket warm with hot honey mustard, ketchup and mustard.
