Maw Maw’s Egg Nog


6 eggs – separated
1/2 cup sugar + 3 tablespoons
1/2 gallon whole milk
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
Pinch of salt
Cinnamon or nutmeg to garnish
If spiking: Buffalo Trace Bourbon or Bourbon Cream


  1. Using a mixer, cream egg yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar.
  2. In a medium pot, heat milk over medium, stirring regularly. When milk starts to slightly smoke, turn heat down to simmer. Gently ladle some of the hot milk into the creamed egg yolks and sugar mixture while whisking. Add a second ladle while whisking, then a third to temper the eggs. Pour egg mixture into pot of remaining milk, add a pinch of salt, and whisk constantly until completely combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites, adding a tablespoon of sugar every few minutes until all 3 have been added and peaks have formed. Fold egg whites into milk mixture then remove from heat. Serve warm with a dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg.

For spiking, add 2 ounces of Buffalo Trace Bourbon or Bourbon Cream.
